Would you meet a stranger from the internet at a park at 6am without knowing who they really are?

That's what most fitness apps expect you to do. Anyone can create a profile, upload any photo, and use any name. There's no way to know if "Ahmed, 28, yoga enthusiast" is actually Ahmed, actually 28, or actually interested in yoga.
Sweatty takes a fundamentally different approach. Every user is ID-verified before they can match with anyone.
What ID Verification Actually Means
On Sweatty, verification is a three-step process:
Step 1: Government ID Upload
Users upload a photo of their government-issued ID — passport, national ID card, or driving licence. Our system verifies:
- The document is authentic (not photoshopped)
- The document is not expired
- The name and date of birth are readable
Step 2: Live Selfie Match
Users take a real-time selfie through the app. AI technology compares the selfie to the ID photo to confirm the person holding the phone is the person on the document.
This prevents:
- Using someone else's ID
- Using old photos that no longer resemble the user
- Creating fake profiles with stock photos
Step 3: Phone Number Verification
A one-time SMS code confirms the user has access to the phone number on their account. This:
- Prevents duplicate accounts
- Ensures the user can be contacted
- Adds another layer of identity confirmation

Why This Matters for Fitness
Fitness partner apps are unique in the app world because they facilitate in-person meetings between strangers in physical settings. This creates risks that don't exist in, say, a recipe app:
- Physical safety — you're alone with someone you don't know
- Location exposure — they know where you train
- Vulnerability — you're in workout clothes, potentially exhausted
- Routine predictability — they know your schedule
ID verification doesn't eliminate all risk, but it creates deterrence and accountability. Someone using their real identity is far less likely to behave inappropriately because they can be identified.
What Other Apps Do (and Don't Do)
| Platform | ID Verification | Selfie Match | Phone Verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sweatty | ✅ Required | ✅ Required | ✅ Required |
| Most fitness apps | ❌ None | ❌ None | ❌ Optional |
| Dating apps (Tinder, Bumble) | ❌ Optional | ✅ Optional | ✅ Required |
| Strava | ❌ None | ❌ None | ❌ Optional |
Sweatty is the only fitness partner platform that requires all three verification steps before allowing matches. This is deliberate — we'd rather have fewer users who are all verified than more users with uncertain identities.
The Trust Score System
Verification is step one. Ongoing trust is built through behaviour.
Every Sweatty user has a trust score that reflects:
- Verification level — ID, selfie, and phone all verified = higher base score
- Session ratings — how partners rate you after each session
- Safety ratings — separate safety-specific scores
- Reliability — show-up rate and punctuality
- Community standing — reports, blocks, and moderation history
A trust score of 90+ means this person has consistently shown up, trained safely, and been rated highly by multiple partners. That's something no photo or bio can tell you.
Privacy and Data Protection
We understand the sensitivity of sharing your ID. Here's how we protect your data:
- Encrypted storage — all ID images are encrypted at rest
- Minimal retention — we verify, then don't need the image
- Never shared — your ID is never shown to other users
- GDPR compliant — full data export and deletion rights
- Regular audits — our security practices are documented and reviewed
Your ID verifies your identity. It doesn't become your identity on the platform. Other users only see your first name, photo, and trust score.
Building a Safer Community
ID verification isn't just about individual safety — it raises the bar for the entire community. When every user knows that every other user is verified:
- Trust is the default, not the exception
- Reporting concerns is taken seriously
- Bad actors are identified and removed quickly
- The overall experience improves for everyone
This is why we made verification mandatory, not optional. An opt-in system means the people who most need to be verified are the ones who opt out.
